Reproductive Partners Announces Elective Single Embryo Transfer Encouragement Program

PR Newswire, Dec 1, 2009

REDONDO BEACH, Calif., Dec. 1 /PRNewswire/ — Reproductive Partners Medical Group, Inc. announces their Elective Single Embryo Transfer (eSET) Encouragement Program to provide a financial incentive for patients with good embryo quality and a good prognosis for success to consider reducing the chance of twins by transferring a single embryo.

The biggest issue in advanced reproductive technology today is reducing the number of multiple pregnancies, even twin pregnancies. In the early days of in vitro fertilization, it was common to transfer a large number of embryos to try to achieve a healthy pregnancy. Today, fewer embryos are required to attain a reasonable chance of success.

“Couples with fertility problems often assume that they can double their chances for a healthy baby by transferring two embryos instead of just one,” explains Dr. Wisot. “But data recently published in the New England Journal of Medicine shows that what they’re really doing is increasing their odds of having twins, which is riskier for the mother and babies alike.”

Pregnancies involving multiples, including twins, come with a greater risk of gestational diabetes, bleeding and preeclampsia for the mother, and cerebral palsy, birth defects, developmental delays and death for the babies. Twins usually survive, but incur higher medical expenses in the first five years of life.

Despite the risks involved in transferring multiple embryos, couples must weigh this decision against both the chance of a failed cycle and the costs incurred by starting another fresh or frozen embryo cycle.

For patients who qualify, the eSET Encouragement Program reduces the economic rationale for transferring more than one embryo. If an elective single embryo transfer is recommended and accepted by the couple and they do not achieve a 12-week pregnancy, the fees for embryo freezing and six months of storage will be waived.

“This innovative program incentivizes IVF patients to avoid the dangers of a twin pregnancy,” says Dr. Wisot. “If Octo-Mom represents the dark side of reproductive medicine, the eSET Encouragement Program is the light.”

THE TAOISEACH wasn’t taking any chances when he went back to Tullamore to turn on the Christmas lights.

Being on home turf, the chances of him being heckled or barracked may have been slim.

But just to be sure that there was no repeat of the events in Athlone, where angry people confronted him about the flooding crisis and the economy, Brian Cowen made sure he was flanked by Offaly’s two favourite people – Irish Open hero Shane Lowry and a certain Mr Claus.

Climate scientist steps down for now

0 Comments | Deseret News (Salt Lake City), Dec 2, 2009 | by Raphael G. Satter Associated Press

LONDON — The chief of a prestigious British research center caught in a storm of controversy over claims that he and others suppressed data about climate change has stepped down pending an investigation, the University of East Anglia said Tuesday.

The university said in a statement that Phil Jones, whose e- mails were among the thousands of pieces of correspondence leaked to the Internet late last month, would relinquish his position as director of Climatic Research Unit until the completion of an independent review.

The university’s Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Research Trevor Davies said the investigation would cover data security, whether the university responded properly to Freedom of Information requests, “and any other relevant issues.” The statement said the specific terms of the review will be announced later in the week.

Jones has been accused by skeptics of man-made climate change of manipulating data to support his research.

In particular, many have pointed to a leaked e-mail in which Jones writes that he had used a “trick” to “hide the decline” in a chart detailing recent global temperatures. Jones has denied manipulating evidence and insisted his comment had been misunderstood, explaining that he’d used the word trick “as in a clever thing to do.”

Nicholas Stern, a leading climate change economist, said the person or people who posted the leaked e-mails had muddled the debate at a critical moment.

Davies said there was nothing in the stolen material to suggest the peer-reviewed publications by the unit “are not of the highest- quality of scientific investigation and interpretation.”

But the correspondence from Jones and others — which appears to include discussions of how to keep critical work out of peer- reviewed journals and efforts to shield scientists’ data and methodology from outside scrutiny — have been seized upon by those who are fighting efforts to impose caps on emissions of carbon dioxide as evidence of a scientific conspiracy.

Sen. James Inhofe, an Oklahoma Republican and a vocal skeptic of global warming, called Tuesday for Senate hearings on the e-mails. In a letter to Sen. Barbara Boxer, a California Democrat who chairs the environment committee, Inhofe said the e-mails could have far- reaching policy implications for the United States

Guide to Proper Care of Your Horse

Sunday, December 27th, 2009

Horses are one of the most exciting pets to own and they make excellent companions. In fact, they are almost like people with their own personalities. However, taking care of your horse is a big responsibility and your horse must be cared for properly to keep it healthy and happy. To provide the appropriate level of care for your horse, you can imagine it as being a child of about 4 years old as this is about their level of mentality.

The first thing that you will need for your horse is a home. This may be a stable or a paddock. If you do not have somewhere large enough for your horse to live at your house, you may want to consider agistment or a place that rents out stables or land for horses to live. You will need to keep your horse’s home clean by removing his droppings daily for stables and weekly for pasture.

There are also many daily responsibilities that you will have as an owner

Kazakhtelecom implements Cisco-based IP network

Telecomworldwire, Dec 2, 2009

TELECOMWORLDWIRE-2 December 2009-Kazakhtelecom implements Cisco-based IP network(C)1994-2009 M2 COMMUNICATIONS http://www.m2.com

Telecom operator Kazakhtelecom and network equipment specialist Cisco (Nasdaq:CSCO), in collaboration with the AMT Group, announced on Wednesday that JSC Kazakhtelecom has deployed a Cisco Internet Protocol Next-Generation Network (IP NGN) based on Cisco optical networking and routing technologies.

Project design and implementation was carried out by AMT Group, a Cisco Gold Certified Partner, based in Moscow. No financial details were disclosed.

According to the company, the solution allows Kazakhtelecom to utilise its existing fibre optic infrastructure in Almaty and to offer Internet-based services to business and residential customers. The services include high-speed Internet access with integrated voice, video and data; virtual private network (VPN) offerings for businesses; Cisco TelePresence virtual meetings; and IPTV.

The solution also brings savings in capital and operating expenditures, which result from the integration of advanced DWDM optical transmitters into the routers, simplified network management and reduced rack space and power consumption.

The operator’s Internet Protocol/Multiprotocol Label Switching (IP/MPLS) core infrastructure in Almaty runs on the Cisco CRS-1 Carrier Routing System platform. The next-generation optical transport network is based on DWDM infrastructure, equipped with the Cisco ONS 15454 Multiservice Transport Platform.

The DWDM technology utilises reconfigurable optical add-drop multiplexer (ROADM) devices implementing omnidirectional capabilities and virtual transponder functionalities, which improves flexibility (any service can be provisioned and delivered from the centralised Cisco transport management system), scalability (up to 3.2Tb/s) and resiliency (network survivability from multiple simultaneous failures).

Senate preserves long-term care program

0 Comments | Deseret News (Salt Lake City), Dec 5, 2009 | by Ricardo Alonso-Zaldivar Associated Press

WASHINGTON — The Senate on Friday turned back a Republican effort to eliminate a long-term care insurance program to help seniors and the disabled, saving the plan once championed by the late Sen. Edward M. Kennedy in its health overhaul bill.

But the vote exposed the difficulties Democratic leaders face in persuading their own moderates to remain united behind sweeping legislation they hope to deliver to President Barack Obama. Eleven Democrats voted with Republicans, who warned that the new program would turn into a drain on the federal budget.

Republicans fell short in a bid to strike the long-term care plan on a 51-47 vote. They needed 60 votes to prevail.

Two leading Democrats who shaped the health care bill, Finance Committee Chairman Max Baucus of Montana and Budget Committee Chairman Kent Conrad of North Dakota, voted with the GOP — underscoring the gravity of the fiscal concerns.

Known as the CLASS Act, short for Community Living Assistance Services and Supports Act, the idea was originally pushed by Kennedy, the Massachusetts liberal who pursued the goal of health care for all through decades in public service until his death from brain cancer in August.

Workers would pay a modest monthly premium during their careers into the voluntary program. If they become disabled, they would get a cash benefit of at least $50 a day. That can help pay for a home care attendant, for supplies and equipment, to make home improvements such as new bathroom railings, or defray nursing home costs. A version of the plan was passed by the House. The Obama administration supports it.

Sen. John Thune, R-S.D., who led the effort to cut the CLASS Act, said it would add another unaffordable commitment to a government already swamped with debt — and taxpayers would eventually get the bill.

“The CLASS Act is the same old Washington, same old smoke and mirrors, same old games,” said Thune. “We are locking in future generations to deficits and debts as far as the eye can see.”

But Sen. Chris Dodd, D-Conn., said the Congressional Budget Office projects the program to be fiscally sound for 75 years, without taxpayer bailouts. As a further safeguard, the Senate voted to ensure that funds collected under the plan would only be used to pay out benefits — and not to cover other government obligations.

“It is a solid program that can make a huge difference for millions of Americans, allowing them to lead independent lives with dignity,” Dodd said.

Supporters said the program would begin to fill a yawning hole in the social safety net
